Colonialism, Education, and Possibility: An Intellectual Speaks on Political Imprisonment



Lake Forest, Ill.—Jose Solis Jordan, professor of education at the University of Puerto Rico, will lecture at Lake Forest College on Tuesday, April 1, 2003 at 4:30 p.m. in Meyer Auditorium located in Hotchkiss Hall, on the College’s Middle Campus. The lecture is titled, “Colonialism, Education, and Possibility: An Intellectual Speaks on Political Imprisonment.” The event is free and open to the public. Born in Puerto Rico, Dr. Solis studied abroad in the U.S. attending Texas Christian University and then the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign where he received his Ph.D. He was an assistant professor at DePaul University before returning to Puerto Rico in 1995. A supporter of the Puerto Rican independence movement, Solis was convicted of attempting to bomb a military recruitment center in Chicago in 1992, a charge to which Solis pleaded not guilty. He spent three and a half years in a federal prison.” Dr. Solis contends that he was charged and convicted to discredit supporters of the Puerto Rican independence movement.

Lake Forest College is a private, liberal arts institution located 30 miles north of downtown Chicago. The college has 1,300 students representing 45 states and 43 other countries.
