Latino Arts and a Preview of the Chicago Latino Film Festival

Lake Forest, Ill –Pepe Vargas, founder and director of the International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago, will give a presentation on “Chicago Latino Arts: Past, Present and Future” at Lake Forest College on Thursday, March 27 at 4 p.m. in Meyer Auditorium. Vargas will also preview special events from the upcoming Chicago Latino Film Festival. The talk is open to the public and is free of charge. For more information please call 847-735-6010.

Mr. Vargas will give an insider’s look at running the Chicago Latino Film Festival, which he began 19 years ago with a budget of $10,000. At the time, 14 films were shown on concrete walls for 500 people. This year’s 19th Chicago Latino Film Festival (April 4 to April 16) will present over 100 films from twenty countries at theatres, civic centers and universities all over the area.

The festival was founded to salute the culture of the over 600 million Latinos around the world and to give the local Hispanic population a pride in their identity. The festival attracts a wide audience, including directors, critics, and film specialists. This year’s Oscar nominee Pedro Almodovar has screened several films in the festival. The International Latino Cultural Center also provides programming in the plastic arts, theatre, and music. Located at Columbia College the center has a lending library for its members, including films from past festivals.

A reception with refreshments and tapas will be held following Vargas' presentation. The talk is sponsored by the Latin American Studies Program, the Mojekwu Fund, the Office of Intercultural Relations, American Studies, and Foreign Languages and Literatures.

Lake Forest College is a private liberal arts institution located 30 miles north of downtown Chicago. The College has 1,300 students representing 45 states and 43 other countries.
