Lake Forest, Ill.-— In an effort to raise awareness and end violence against women, Lake Forest College students, faculty and staff will present benefit performances of “The Vagina Monologues” on Thursday, February 20 at 8 p.m., and Saturday, February 22 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. The performances will take place in McCormick Auditorium, located in the Johnson Science Center on the College’s Middle Campus. For more information please contact 847-735-6235. “The Vagina Monologues” written by Eve Ensler, has received wide acclaim. The New York Times called it “a bona fide phenomenon,” and Variety magazine praises the play as “a work of art with a wildfire word of mouth.” As part of a global V-Day campaign, Ensler has given the rights to any college or university to produce benefit performances of “The Vagina Monologues” to raise awareness and funds for anti-violence groups within their own communities. V-Day itself stages large-scale benefits and promotes innovative gatherings and programs (The Afghan Women's Summit, The Stop Rape Contest, Indian Country Outreach, and more) to change social attitudes towards violence against women. In 2002, more than 800 V-Day benefit events were presented by local volunteer activists around the world, educating millions of people about the reality of violence against women and girls. Cast members and organizers representing the local area are students Katie Cotter (Chicago), Lily Gershenson (Oak Park), Jen Hoyer (Rolling Meadows), Gwyn Mibeck (North Chicago), and Lynn Mutch (Barrington), along with Tiffany Martinez (Gallup, New Mexico) and Lydia Swift (Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania) and Angie Thornton (Atwater, California). Joining them are faculty and staff members Martha Kelly Bates (Lake Forest), Shannon McKenzie (Lake Forest) and Dean Beth Tyler (Chicago). Proceeds from the performances at Lake Forest College will benefit LaCasa, the Lake County Council Against Sexual Assault based in Gurnee, Illinois.
