“Lula's New Path: Prospects for Reform in Brazil”


Lake Forest, Ill –Lake Forest College will host a panel discussion titled "Lula's New Path: Prospects for Reform in Brazil" on Wednesday, January 29 at 5 p.m. in Meyer Auditorium, Hotchkiss Hall. Three distinguished professors will examine various aspects of Brazil under the leadership of its newly elected president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The event is free and open to the public. Professor David George, internationally known expert on Brazilian theater, will discuss the implications of Lula's appointment of Gilberto Gil, a popular musician and composer, to the position of Minister of Culture. Professor Nader Nazmi, author and expert on issues of economic stability in Latin America, has served as Director of Analysis for Latin America at Bank One, and as an International Advisor to the Central Bank of Ecuador. Nazmi will examine Lula's recent economic measures, such as canceling a $720 million contract for fighter jets to combat hunger, as well as other factors in Brazil's economy. Professor Rand Smith, author of numerous books and articles on worker’s parties in Europe and Latin America, will discuss the importance of Lula being Brazil’s first president elected from the Worker's Party. He will also predict how relations with the United States will evolve. The panel will be moderated by Professor Lois Barr, chair of the Latin American Studies Program at the College.

Lake Forest College is a private liberal arts institution located 30 miles north of downtown Chicago. The College has 1,300 students representing 45 states and 43 other countries.
