Author Fern Schumer Chapman Discusses her Book Lake Forest, Ill— Author Fern Schumer Chapman will discuss her book Motherland: Beyond the Holocaust – A Mother-Daughter Journey to Reclaim the Past at Lake Forest College on Wednesday, November 20 at 7:30 p.m. The lecture will be in the Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel on the College’s Middle Campus near the intersection of Sheridan and College Roads. Chapman’s book tells the story of her journey with her mother back to the small German village her mother fled in 1938. One of only two Jewish families in the town Chapman’s mother, 12 year old Edith Westerfield, was sent away from her family to the United States. The novel recounts her mother’s journey back to Germany to heal the wounds left by the Holocaust. At the same time, the two discover the value of motherhood. It has received wide-acclaim from reviewers including The Chicago Tribune Book Review; “Meticulously detailed account...which Chapman renders with precise and often moving prose.” The book has been highlighted on the Oprah Winfrey Show, and is a finalist for the National Jewish Book Award.
