Lake Forest, Ill.—Mike Seeger, an eminent collector and performer of traditional American folk music, will be a Musician in Residence at Lake Forest College from November 11 through November 13. Seeger will present and perform at two public events. Monday, November 11 at 4 p.m. in Reid Hall – a workshop on traditional music and instruments, including banjo, mandolin, and fiddle. Tuesday, November 12 at 8 p.m. in Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel Seeger presents "Music from True Vine: A Concert of Traditional American Music." Both events are free and open to the public. Mike Seeger is a member of a family that the New York Times recently called "America’s folk music royalty." Mr. Seeger’s father, Charles Seeger, was a well-known musicologist, and his mother, Ruth Crawford Seeger, was an accomplished composer and music teacher. Mr. Seeger’s siblings -– half-brother Pete and sister Peggy -– have had highly successful careers as folk music performers. Seeger has been a major figure in American folk music for over forty years. He is a founding member of the old-time music group, the New Lost City Ramblers, which has recorded over two dozen albums. On his own, Seeger has recorded with a "who’s who" of roots music performers, including Bob Dylan, Ralph Stanley, David Grisman, and John Hartford. A citation from the Ralph J. Gleason Lifetime Achievement Award establishes Seeger’s grandeur, "[Seeger] remains one of our great musical and cultural resources. To see him perform is to experience the richness of our traditions." He is accomplished on many instruments: guitar, mandolin, banjo, fiddle, and concertina. Seeger is also a five-time Grammy Nominee winner. Further information about Seeger can be found on his website: http://mikeseeger.info.
