Memorial Service for Donald E. Bartlett



Lake Forest, Ill – A memorial service will be held for Donald E. Bartlett, William R. Bross Professor of Religion, Emeritus at Lake Forest College on Friday, September 20 at 5 p.m. in Lily Reid Holt Memorial Chapel. Dr. Bartlett a resident of Lake Forest from 1958-1997, passed away on May 21, 2002 in St. Simon’s Island, Georgia.

Professor Bartlett was a member of the Lake Forest College faculty from 1958 until 1979, leaving his teaching duties briefly on two occasions to serve as Acting Provost and Acting Dean of Students. His undergraduate training was at William Penn College; his M.A. at Haverford College, his B.D. at McCormick Theological Seminary, and his Ph.D. at Yale University.

He is remembered by colleagues as a deeply involved and trusted academic citizen. In the 1960's he directed Program II, a distinctive independent study program supported by a Ford Foundation grant. Recent honorary degree recipient Carl MaultsBy was an early participant in Program II. After his retirement, Don Bartlett remained involved in the College by frequently attending cultural activities.


He is survived by his wife Mary Bartlett of St. Simon’s Island, Georgia, and two daughters, Ann Heim of Lake Forest and Molly Bartlett of Chicago.

Lake Forest College is a private liberal arts institution located 30 miles north of downtown Chicago. The College has 1,300 students representing 44 states and 41 other countries.
