STUDS TERKEL TO RECEIVE BERTRAND RUSSELL SOCIETY ANNUAL AWARD
Society dedicated to British philosopher to hold meeting at Lake Forest College, May 31-June 2

Famed Chicago-based broadcaster and author Studs Terkel will appear before the annual meeting of the Bertrand Russell Society on May 31 to receive this year1s Bertrand Russell Society Annual Award.

The Bertrand Russell Society is a nonprofit group dedicated to remembering the great British philosopher and humanitarian’s life and work. Each year, the society bestows its annual BRS Award on an individual or organization whose work best furthers Russell’s interests and commitments.

Terkel, who specializes in oral histories and broadcasting, is being recognized by the society because of his life’s work on behalf of many causes that Bertrand Russell held dear, including peace, justice, and the plight of the poor. He also interviewed Russell for Chicago’s WFMT in 1962. Terkel is the author of many books, such as Division Street (1967), Hard Times (1970), Working (1974), The Good War (1984; Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction), The Great Divide (1988), Race (1992), and My American Century (1997).

"Studs Terkel has long championed the disadvantaged, just as Bertrand Russell did," said Alan Schwerin, president of the Bertrand Russell Society. "We are very happy to be giving him this award."

"I am delighted to be this year’s recipient of the award, and I am very grateful to the members of the society for selecting me," Terkel said. "Meeting Lord Russell was one of the great moments of my lifetime."

The Bertrand Russell Society is holding its 29th Annual Meeting May 31 to June 2 at Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Illinois. The meeting features scholarly and popular presentations about Russell and related subjects such as "Russell and Peace in the Middle East" and "Russell and the Early Wittgenstein on Scepticism," and a Saturday night banquet with a "Red Hackle" hour (in honor of Russell’s favorite brand of Scotch). It is sponsored by the Lake Forest College Department of Philosophy and Phi Sigma Tau.

The Lake Forest College campus is located at 555 N. Sheridan Road, Lake Forest, Ill. Registration will be open Friday, May 31 from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Glen Rowan building.
