Carl Lorenzo MaultsBy to Receive Honorary Degree at Lake Forest College Commencement



Lake Forest, Ill – Carl Lorenzo MaultsBy, musician, conductor, composer, teacher, and entrepreneur, will be awarded the degree Doctor of Fine Arts, honoris causa at Lake Forest College’s 124th Commencement on Saturday, May 11.

Mr. MaultsBy, a 1969 graduate of Lake Forest College, is currently the Executive Artistic Director of Rejoicensemble!, a chamber vocal ensemble that performs music of the African Diaspora. He was recently inducted into the African Music Hall of Fame in March and was awarded a Fromm Commission for Composition by the Fromm Music Foundation at Harvard University.

Others being presented honorary degrees at the 2002 Commencement are Deborah Leff, director of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library; Cass R. Sunstein, the Karl N. Lewellyn Distinguished Professor of Jurisprudence in the Law School and in the Department of Political Science at the University of Chicago; and Studs Terkel, Pulitzer Prize-winning author, oral and social historian, and television and radio personality. Mr. Terkel will deliver the Commencement address titled "The Need To Ask Why."

President Stephen D. Schutt will preside over the ceremony, during which more than 235 graduates will be awarded Bachelor of Arts and Master of Liberal Studies degrees. Commencement begins at 10:45 a.m. with the academic procession into Johnson Science Courtyard on the College’s Middle Campus. In the event of inclement weather the ceremony will be held inside the Sports Center on South Campus.

Lake Forest College is a private liberal arts institution located 30 miles north of downtown Chicago. The College has 1,250 students representing 44 states and 41 other countries.
