Panel Discussion Offers Insight into the "Beautiful Mind" of John Nash



Lake Forest, Ill – The Oscar nominated movie "A Beautiful Mind" will be the topic of a panel discussion hosted by professors at Lake Forest College. "The ‘Beautiful Mind’ of John Nash: His Mathematics, Economics, and Psychology" will be presented on Tuesday, March 26 at 7 p.m. in Meyer Auditorium.

This powerful movie left many with questions about the contributions and conditions of John Nash, the panel will shed light on issues not dealt with in the movie. Three distinguished Lake Forest College faculty members in different academic disciplines will contribute. Edward W. Packel, the Ernest H. Volwiler Professor of Mathematics, will explain for a lay audience the importance of Nash’s contributions to the field of mathematics. John Nash’s field is mathematics but he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics. Jeffrey O. Sundberg, associate professor of economics, will speak about the importance of Nash’s mathematics to theoretical and applied economics. Phylis M. Frankel, associate professor of psychology and director of the counseling center, will discuss Nash’s mental illness and genius.
