"The Birth and Death of Stars"
Shapley Astronomy Lecture at Lake Forest College

Lake Forest, Ill – "The Birth and Death of Stars" will be the topic of the Shapley Astronomy Lecture at Lake Forest College presented by John R. Dickel, professor of astronomy at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The public is invited to attend this free lecture on Monday, March 25 at 7:30 p.m. in McCormick Auditorium.

Professor Dickel studies supernova remnants both observationally and theoretically to detail the interaction of the expanding blast with the surrounding interstellar medium. By using radio, optical, infrared, and x-ray wavelengths, Professor Dickel and his colleagues can investigate all the various surroundings to see how clumping and irregularities affect the expansion. While the topic may be complex, Professor Dickel’s talk is aimed at a general audience.

The American Astronomical Society sponsors the Shapley Lecture as part of its Visiting Lectureship Program, which brings professional astronomers to college campuses for a two day visit.

McCormick Auditorium is located in the Johnson Science Center on the College’s Middle Campus near the intersection of College and Sheridan roads in Lake Forest. For more information, please call
