Lake Forest, Ill.– Lake Forest College invites the public to an evening with Chilean artist Alfredo Jaar on Tuesday, January 29 at 7 p.m.. Jaar will give a talk focusing on his most recent public projects in Sweden, Japan, Mexico, Canada and South Korea; the title of the talk is "Clouds." The presentation is free of charge and will be held in Meyer Auditorium, located in Hotchkiss Hall on the College’s Middle Campus, near the intersection of College and Sheridan roads in Lake Forest. Jaar will be the Sonnenschein Artist-in-Residence at Lake Forest College, spending a week on campus from January 28–February 1. An internationally renowned photographer, he will be conducting a series of workshops and lectures for students, faculty, staff and the community. "Alfredo is a tremendous artist, quite articulate with a broad interest in political and social justice issues around the globe," says Professor Karen Lebergott, chair of the College’s Artist-in-Residence Program. "His work has been exhibited in solo and group shows in museums around the world, and we are honored that he is sharing his insights, creativity, and experiences with Lake Forest." Resisting the impulse to propagandize, Jaar uses a hybrid form of art-making which incorporates installation, photographs, sculpture, architecture, and text to heighten our consciousness about important social issues including homelessness, industrial waste, and third world labor conditions. Jaar challenges commonly held opinions about the relationship between art and politics, he fuses the aesthetic and ethical to focus on injustices around the world. The Artist-in-Residence program at Lake Forest College is made possible by a gift from the Hugo Sonnenschein Family. The program began as a poet-in-residence venture that has since expanded to include visual artists, playwrights and writers. Besides supporting the Artist-in-Residence program, the Sonnenscheins are also patrons of a gallery in the College’s Durand Art Institute. Lake Forest College is a private liberal arts institution located 30 miles north of downtown Chicago. The College has 1,200 students representing 44 states and 43 other countries.
