MANAGEMENT CONSULTANT FOR ENERGY COMPANIES
TIMOTHY WOODS, CLASS OF 2001
As a Lake Forest student, Tim majored in chemistry and gained hands-on experience with instrumentation in his science labs. This training helped him land his first job out of college as a research and development scientist for BP Amoco. “What got me to be competitive in the job market was that I knew how to operate and fix instrumentation,” he says. “That’s not common at a larger school. But because of that experience, I was able to come in and contribute immediately.”

A close-knit culturally diverse campus provides opportunities for students to learn from each other and gain effective interpersonal communication skills.

But Tim says that Lake Forest College prepared him for his career in other ways too. One of the things that he liked most about going to a liberal arts college was an ability to explore other interests, such as jazz band and gospel choir, which he started, and how the experience of living on a small campus forced him to interact with a diverse student body in different situations.
The interpersonal skills that he developed from these interactions have served him well in his current position at Accenture as a management consultant for energy companies because, just as he did at Lake Forest, he now works with people from different backgrounds in a small setting. “That’s what I have used to my advantage at Accenture,” he says.
