Staff Psychologist and Community Wellness Coordinator

Department: The Health & Wellness Center
Supervisor: Associate Dean of Students and Director of Health & Wellness
Position Duration: Full-Time, 12 months
Hours of Work: 8:30 a.m.- 5:00 p.m.  Evening and weekend work required.

Function
The Staff Psychologist and Community Wellness Coordinator is a member of the Lake Forest College Student Affairs staff and reports to the Associate Dean of Students and Director of Health & Wellness. The Director provides leadership in the development of a student development program within a residential campus consistent with the philosophies and goals of Lake Forest College, the Office of Student Affairs, the Health & Wellness Center and the Lake Forest College mission statement. 

The Staff Psychologist and Community Wellness Coordinator provides leadership and manages health and wellness promotion and community development surrounding alcohol, drugs, and other wellness issues facing the college-aged population.  These programs will effectively educate students about health, mental health, wellness, and positive psychology to increase student’s awareness and identification of health and psychological issues and help educate and inform students about healthy lifestyle choices.  The programs will help our students develop resilience, enhance optimism, manage stress, and increase well-being and thus improve the functioning of our residential learning community. The Staff Psychologist and Community Wellness Coordinator has direct leadership and supervision responsibilities over the Healthlink Peer Education Program* (to be developed).  This program will develop effective health promotion and prevention strategies that result in a decrease of students with problematic behaviors related to health and disease, alcohol and other drug use, sexual assault and violence, and help promote safe sex practices.

The Staff Psychologist and Community Wellness Coordinator is responsible for providing leadership for the alcohol and other drug intervention and prevention program, including alcohol and drug assessments, management of the AlcoholEdu education program, and other educational and prevention services and programs that meet the needs of Lake Forest College students regarding AOD use.  The Staff Psychologist  and Community Wellness Coordinator will develop effective intervention and prevention strategies that result in a decrease of students with problematic behavior in regard to AOD use. 

The Staff Psychologist and Community Wellness Coordinator will also function as a Counseling Service Department staff clinician, providing intake evaluations and dispositions, individual and group counseling, crises intervention, psychological assessments, supervision of trainees, and consultation with administrators, faculty, staff and students.  This position also participates in the department 24 hour on-call emergency rotation.

Qualifications
A doctoral degree in counseling, psychology, clinical psychology or related discipline and State of Illinois licensure (or licensure eligibility). 

Outstanding counseling, crisis management, programming, training, interpersonal, oral and written communication, advising and problem solving skills; experience assessing and treating alcohol and substance issues; high degree of energy; sensitivity to the academic and personal needs of college students; understanding of and commitment to the liberal arts; enthusiasm for teaching and learning that goes beyond the classroom.

The successful candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Excellent clinical skills, including the ability to diagnose and treat a broad range of psychological issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship skills. 
  • Knowledge of the developmental concerns of traditional-age college students.
  • Ability to assess, manage and provide treatment to individuals experiencing crisis.
  • Experience working with alcohol and substance issues.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
  • Strong clinical supervision skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to deliver information and services in a timely fashion. 
  • Ability to effectively work with students, faculty, staff, alumni and parents.
  • Ability to develop, present and assess educational programs.
  • Interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong knowledge of theories of program development, health promotion and their application to a student population.
  • Ability to develop, market and present educational programs.


Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To:

  1. Provide clinical services, including intake evaluations and dispositions, individual and group counseling, crisis intervention and consultation for Counseling Services.
  2. Participate in 24 hour on-call emergency rotation.
  3. Provide case management.
  4. Provide clinical supervision/consultation to graduate student trainees.
  5. Maintain case records as required by professional standards and applicable statutes.
  6. Develop education and prevention programs that about physical and mental health topics, wellness, and positive psychology to increase student’s awareness and identification of wellness issues and to educate and inform them about healthy lifestyle choices. 
  7. Develop educational programs that target high-risk with health, mental health and wellness issues.
  8. Develop and present prevention programs related to alcohol and other drugs.
  9. Provide leadership in developing and enhancing the creative use of technology in program delivery and development of educational programs for mental health outreach.
  10. Network with community and mental health agencies (e.g., AA, ACOA, Al-Alon, Highland Park Hospital, Lake Forest Hospital, Lake County Behavior Health Agency), and serve as a referral source.
  11. Consult with faculty, administrators and staff regarding concerns related to alcohol and drugs, as appropriate. 
  12. Administer the AlcoholEdu web based education program.
  13. Develop educational programs that target high-risk student groups and that aim to reduce harm (e.g., reduce alcohol violations, sexual assaults, poor academic performance, and interpersonal violence).
  14. Plan and implement on-going program evaluations to establish effectiveness in reducing the negative consequences of excessive or underage alcohol consumption, drug use and drug misuse.
  15. Create appropriate print materials (e.g. brochures, ads) for campus education and prevention projects.
  16. Assist with the recruitment, training, and supervision of the Healthlink Peer Education Program.  Develop peer led workshops and activities.
  17. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness and impact of all programs and services.
  18. Work closely with other Student Affairs professionals including the Associate Dean of Students and Director of Health & Wellness, Associate Dean of Students and Director for Residential Life, Assistant Dean of Students and Director of the Gates Center, Associate Dean of Students and Director of Intercultural Affairs, and Dean of Students and other professional staff to develop department priorities with regard to leadership, community service, and student development issues.
  19. Actively participate in College and Student Affairs programs and initiatives.
  20. Pursue continued professional education to enhance skills and to keep abreast of current issues and practices in student development that are pertinent to a college student population.
  21. Ensure that all services and programs meet the highest ethical standards and in accordance with professional ethics.
  22. Participate in College-wide events (e.g., Student Orientation, Admission Day events.)
  23. Serve on Student Affairs and campus-wide committees.
  24. Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean of Students and Director of Health & Wellness and the Dean of Students.

Physical Environment
Office duties conducted within a professional office setting with the need to access campus buildings with stairs and complete campus errands.  Position requires regular computer keyboard use.  Some light lifting (10-15 lbs.) may be required.  Some travel may be associated with the position.
